Long a Royal Air Force staging post before passing to Oman in the 1970s, Masirah today is principally a Royal Air Force of Oman base, with civil and commercial cargo activity secondary. The island off Oman's east coast is linked to the mainland by ferry, which also carries its supplies. Commercial freight is handled via Muscat or mainland ports rather than this military field. Masirah is better known to travellers for the steady winds that draw kitesurfers. For civilian logistics it remains a restricted-access special case.
