For the Isla de la Juventud, the choice is a short hop by air or a long crossing by sea — and Rafael Cabrera Airport (IATA: GER) near Nueva Gerona provides the faster option, linking Cuba's second-largest island to Havana. Regional aircraft handle the route, with freight confined to whatever travels in the hold. Bulk goods reach the island mainly by ship through the port of Nueva Gerona rather than by air. Scheduled air cargo for the wider region is processed at José Martí International (HAV) in Havana. Beyond transport, GER feeds the island's dive tourism and its quiet southern beaches.
