What was Angola's busiest gateway for decades is now a closed chapter: on 1 March 2026 all commercial traffic at Quatro de Fevereiro (LAD) shifted to the new Dr. António Agostinho Neto International Airport (NBJ), some 40 km south of Luanda. For freight forwarders the practical consequence is simple — airfreight to and from the capital now clears through NBJ, whose cargo terminal is built for roughly 130,000 tonnes a year. Cargo through old LAD had always been modest and oil-driven, dominated by drilling and production equipment and project shipments rather than general consolidated freight. National air cargo stood at about 31 million tonne-kilometres in 2021, with Luanda handling the bulk of it as the country's principal station at the time. Customs is administered by Angola's tax-and-customs authority AGT, with pre-shipment inspection and document-heavy clearance still common. Unlike many capitals, Luanda has no strong rail link to its coast, so the Port of Luanda — not a rail corridor — is the natural complement to air for heavy or oversized loads. Shippers seeking cargo capacity, handlers or bonded storage should reference NBJ; LAD itself no longer accepts commercial flights.
