FNJ Airport (Pyongyang Sunan International Airport) – Cargo, Address, Transit

About This Airport

Air Koryo, North Korea's state flag carrier, runs Pyongyang Sunan International Airport (IATA: FNJ, ICAO: ZKPY) as its home base and shapes almost everything that moves through it. The country's only international gateway sits in Sunan District about 24 kilometres north of the capital, with a Terminal 2 opened in 2015 handling the entire passenger operation. The schedule remains thin: for the 2026 summer season Air Koryo flies twice weekly to Beijing, twice to Shenyang and three times to Vladivostok, with occasional charters to Shanghai; Air China resumed its own Beijing–Pyongyang service on 30 March 2026, the first since early 2020, after cross-border passenger rail links reopened. Cargo capacity is minimal: most freight travels as belly load aboard Air Koryo aircraft, since dedicated freighter services are heavily curtailed by UN sanctions and there is no commercially accessible cargo terminal in the Western sense. Nationwide, only about 7,500 tonne-kilometres of air cargo were carried across North Korea in 2023, underlining how marginal air freight remains here. Customs clearance runs through the General Customs Administration, with import permits, inspections and compliance checks adding long lead times. For commercial shipment volumes, forwarders rely not on FNJ but on the seaport of Nampo some 50 kilometres to the southwest or the rail crossing at Sinuiju into Dandong, China. Any shipment to North Korea requires a prior check against UN and national sanctions regimes, which prohibit most trade for EU, UK, US and Swiss companies.
