Northern Cyprus opened a new front door in 2023: Ercan Airport (IATA: ECN, ICAO: LCEN), near Tymbou east of Nicosia, inaugurated a terminal six times larger than its predecessor, rated for up to 10 million passengers a year, alongside a runway extended to 3,100 m. Because the airport lies in the internationally unrecognised north of Cyprus – recognised only by Turkey – every flight links to Turkey, flown by Turkish Airlines, Pegasus, AJet and SunExpress to around eleven Turkish cities. ECN handled roughly 3.66 million passengers in the first eight months of 2025, up about 19% year on year. No dedicated air cargo is processed; shipments move as belly cargo via Turkey. The nearest internationally recognised cargo alternative is Larnaca (LCA) in the island's south, about 40 km away.
