MBA Airport (Moi International Airport) – Cargo, Address, Transit

About This Airport

A single cargo facility run by Kenya Airfreight Handling Ltd (KAHL) handles roughly 500 tonnes of imports and exports per month at Moi International Airport (MBA/HKMO), making Mombasa Kenya's coastal air freight gateway rather than a national one. Ground handling by Swissport covers general and special cargo, perishables, pharmaceuticals and express shipments, reflecting the coastal region's fish, horticulture and tourism-driven trade. Most tonnage moves as belly cargo on passenger aircraft; scheduled maindeck freighter services are not consistently confirmed and tend to operate as charters. The airport sits beside the Port of Mombasa, East Africa's largest seaport, and the Kenya Airports Authority has been pursuing plans since 2025 for a sea-air terminal that would transfer ocean freight from Asia onto flights to Europe. Inland connections follow the Northern Corridor (A109 road) and the standard-gauge railway to Nairobi, about 490 km away, and onward to Uganda, Rwanda and South Sudan. Customs clearance is handled by the Kenya Revenue Authority, with additional phytosanitary or veterinary paperwork required for flowers, fish and vegetables. Shippers with large or time-critical volumes usually route via Nairobi (NBO), while Dar es Salaam (DAR) serves Tanzanian hinterland traffic.
