Humanitarian operators – UNHAS, the World Food Programme and assorted NGOs – are the defining users of Malakal Airport (MAK), capital field of South Sudan's Upper Nile State. The town, on the east bank of the White Nile, hosts a major UNMISS Protection of Civilians site, and most flights carry relief rather than commercial freight. There is no dedicated cargo terminal; scheduled international air cargo routes through Juba (JUB), some 650 km to the south. Onward movement relies on White Nile barge traffic and road. For forwarders, MAK is a feeder point for aid and project shipments, not a standalone cargo airport.
