Operated by Aerodom under VINCI Airports, with general-aviation handling by Universal Aviation, La Isabela International Airport — officially Dr. Joaquín Balaguer (JBQ) — is Santo Domingo's secondary field at El Higüero, about 10 km northwest of the centre. Opened in 2006 to replace the old Herrera airport, it serves domestic routes, short Caribbean hops and a strong business-aviation segment. Its 1,659-metre runway suits aircraft up to ATR-72 size, and there is no dedicated cargo terminal, so air freight is handled at Las Américas (SDQ). Apron space accommodates only a handful of small aircraft. For forwarders, JBQ is a general-aviation and regional point rather than a cargo facility.
