IOA Airport (Ioannina King Pyrrhus National Airport) – Cargo, Address, Transit

About This Airport

Epirus, the agricultural northwest of Greece, generates the modest traffic that passes through Ioannina King Pyrrhus National Airport (IATA: IOA, ICAO: LGIO), which handled 145,504 passengers and about 1,900 aircraft movements in 2025, up 13.7 per cent year on year. Set beside Lake Pamvotida and operated by the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA), it links the university city mainly to Athens, served by Aegean, Olympic Air and Sky Express, with ground handling by the national agents Goldair Handling and Skyserv. There is no dedicated cargo terminal and no freighter service: what little air freight moves does so as belly cargo, historically well under 100 tonnes a year and largely regional farm produce. For genuine air cargo capacity, Thessaloniki (SKG), roughly 210 road kilometres away via the Egnatia Odos motorway, and Athens (ATH) are the practical alternatives. The same motorway connects Epirus to the ferry port of Igoumenitsa for Italy-bound road freight, and customs clearance for the region is handled at those gateways rather than at Ioannina.
