About This Airport
Unlike Tajikistan's civil airports, Farkhor is a purely military airfield with no commercial role. It is best known as India's first overseas military base, used from the late 1990s near Parkhar — about 130 kilometres south-east of Dushanbe and only a few kilometres from the Afghan border — to support the Afghan Northern Alliance, with a 2002 agreement covering refurbishment and joint use. The Indian Air Force operates it together with the Tajik Air Force, and its roughly 3,200-metre runway can take transport and combat aircraft; since India wound up its presence at Ayni air base in October 2025, Farkhor is described as the remaining Indian military foothold in Central Asia. There is no IATA or ICAO code, no scheduled service, no civil cargo terminal and no public customs post. Shippers serving southern Tajikistan use Dushanbe International Airport (DYU), the country's principal freight location, with Khujand (LBD) in the north as a second option, and Tajik customs clearance takes place there.
