The Hellenic Air Force's transport squadrons, not freight forwarders, set the tone at Elefsis Air Base (ICAO LGEL) on the Saronic Gulf west of Athens. The 112 Combat Wing based here groups the C-130B/H Hercules tactical transport squadrons, the 352 VIP transport squadron and two search-and-rescue squadrons; the field carries no IATA code, no scheduled services and no commercial cargo terminal. Military airlift, government flights and humanitarian relief missions run through air force channels rather than through commercial air freight. Shippers serving Attica use Athens International Airport (ATH) some 50 road kilometres to the east, which handled around 34 million passengers in 2025 and carries the region's belly cargo; Thessaloniki (SKG) is the secondary option. Customs clearance for air freight accordingly takes place at Athens. Elefsina's real logistics weight lies with its adjacent seaport and the container terminals of Piraeus roughly 25 kilometres away, not with the runway.
