About This Airport

Construction cranes and fighter jets, not freight forwarders, set the tone at Air Base 71 "General Emanoil Ionescu" near Câmpia Turzii, southeast of Cluj-Napoca in Transylvania. The Air Force Civil Engineer Center and AFIMSC Detachment 4 are running roughly US$152 million in infrastructure work, on top of more than US$100 million already spent under the European Deterrence Initiative on a hangar, parking apron and squadron operations facility. The Romanian Air Force operates the field; F-16s returned in April 2024, and U.S. forces fly MQ-9 Reaper surveillance drones from here toward the Black Sea and the Ukrainian border. There is no civilian scheduled or cargo traffic whatsoever - no commercial handling, no public customs office for air freight, no forwarder facilities. Shippers in the Cluj region use Cluj-Napoca Airport (CLJ) some 40 kilometres away, or Bucharest Otopeni (OTP) when freighter capacity is required. For context, Romania's flagship NATO build-out is not here but at Air Base 57 Mihail Kogălniceanu near Constanta, a roughly EUR 2.5 billion project intended to become Europe's largest NATO installation.
