Diamonds define Alexander Bay: the airfield (ALJ/FAAB) at South Africa's far north-western tip serves Alexkor's land, river, beach and marine diamond operations rather than any freight market. Scheduled services ended when the airport closed to commercial traffic in 2007, leaving corporate, government and charter movements. Travellers and shippers now use Oranjemund Airport (OMD), about 18 km away on the Namibian bank of the Orange River, which links to Windhoek and Cape Town — the Alexander Bay/Oranjemund border crossing has to be built into any schedule. Neither field offers a commercial cargo terminal: high-value parcels move under escort on passenger or charter flights, while general air freight is routed through Cape Town (CPT), roughly 800 road kilometres to the south. For consolidated and project cargo, road haulage along the N7 through Springbok remains the practical answer. Forwarders should treat ALJ as a mining-logistics special case, not a handling point.
