When port workers walk off the job for a few hours to put pressure on the other side during ongoing wage talks, this is a warning strike (Warnstreik). Unlike an indefinite all-out strike, a warning strike is time-limited – usually to individual shifts or a few days – and mainly signals that the union is prepared to escalate further if no acceptable offer is made. Warning strikes only become legally possible once the peace obligation of the current collective agreement has expired. In logistics, even short warning strikes can have significant knock-on effects: missed vessel cut-offs, closed terminal gates, postponed rail dispatches, and blocked truck slots often ripple across several shifts, even when the actual stoppage lasts only hours. Freight forwarders should therefore review contingency plans and alternative routings early, as soon as warning strikes are announced or become likely.
