A manufacturer sources components from Asia, assembles in Europe, holds stock in North America, and fulfils orders through regional distribution hubs—this interconnected network of suppliers, factories, freight forwarders, customs authorities, and buyers is a global supply chain. Every link demands coordination, end-to-end visibility, and compliance with each country's regulations. Cross-border customs formalities, currency exposure, and geopolitical dependencies introduce complexity that domestic supply chains do not face. A disruption at a single node—a port strike, a customs hold, or a supplier failure—can cascade across the entire network. The term describes the structure of the network itself; the strategic planning and control of that structure is referred to as global supply chain management.
