When a union and an employers' association renegotiate wages and working conditions every few years, industry participants refer to this as a bargaining round (Tarifrunde). It comprises several negotiation sessions in which both sides exchange demands and offers until either a new collective agreement is reached or talks fail and industrial action such as warning strikes follows. In German seaport logistics, for example, ver.di and the Central Association of German Seaport Companies (ZDS) regularly negotiate hourly wages and pay grades for tens of thousands of employees. For freight forwarders and shippers, the start of a bargaining round signals increased operational risk in the coming weeks, especially if negotiation sessions repeatedly end without agreement. The round concludes either with a signed collective agreement, which triggers a new peace obligation, or with a settlement following prior warning strikes. Not to be confused with individual negotiation sessions, which are the sub-steps that make up a bargaining round.
