Bunker costs are a vessel's fuel costs; the term derives from bunkering, the process of taking fuel on board. They form the largest variable cost block in ship operation and, depending on fuel price, speed and route, can account for a substantial share of a round voyage's total costs. Shipping lines pass bunker cost fluctuations on to shippers via surcharges such as the Bunker Adjustment Factor. Route changes have a direct impact: diversions via the Cape Route increase consumption per round trip by roughly 30 percent and can add several hundred thousand dollars per voyage for large container vessels – costs that reach the entire supply chain through freight rates. Slow steaming, modern propulsion systems and alternative fuels are common levers to curb bunker costs. Freight forwarders must factor the surcharges into their quotations. Not to be confused with bunker cost management, which describes the systematic steering and hedging of these costs.
