Master data is the stable reference information that uniquely describes and identifies business objects such as customers, suppliers, products, or locations. It differs from transaction data – individual orders, invoices, or bookings – in that it changes infrequently and serves as the shared reference base for all downstream processes: order fulfilment, customs declaration, invoicing. In freight forwarding and customs operations, the quality of master data has direct consequences: an incorrect commodity code in the product master can block a customs clearance; an outdated delivery address can misroute a shipment. Regular maintenance and validation of master data is therefore standard risk management for any operational logistics or customs team.
