Definition & Explanation
Shortages surface when the quantity of goods actually available falls below what was ordered or stated on the delivery note – a gap that forces partial shipments or delays fulfilment entirely. The discrepancy typically becomes apparent during warehouse picking or at the consignee's goods receipt. Freight forwarders and warehouse operators must document shortages carefully to substantiate customer claims and trigger replenishment orders. Root causes range from inventory counting errors and unreported damage to theft or upstream supply failures. Unlike a mis-shipment, a shortage involves correctly addressed goods that have arrived at the right destination – there are simply not enough of them.
