When a driver opens their stop list in the morning, route planning is already done: before the vehicle leaves the depot, the sequence and path for reaching multiple delivery or pickup points have been determined. Driving time, cost, traffic forecasts, recipient time windows, and statutory driving and rest hour regulations all feed into the calculation. Route planning is therefore the operational foundation of transport control. It differs from route optimization, which dynamically adjusts a planned route in real time as conditions change. Modern TMS platforms largely automate route planning and connect it with order management and telematics data.
