In container shipping, a rollover (cargo rollover) occurs when a firmly booked container is not loaded onto the confirmed vessel but is shifted to a later departure. Common causes are overbooking by the shipping line, a blank sailing or a port omission, missed cut-off times, missing or incorrect documents, and delays in customs clearance. For freight forwarders and shippers, a rollover means longer transit times, possible missed connections at transshipment ports and additional costs – for example when the free time at the terminal expires and demurrage charges accrue. In practice, early booking, timely submission of VGM and shipping documents, and clear agreements with the carrier on loading priority help reduce the risk. Not to be confused with transshipment, the scheduled transfer of a container to a connecting vessel at a hub port.
