Over-short-damaged (OSD) freight claims address three distinct discrepancy types that can occur on delivery: cargo received in excess of the documented quantity, cargo received short, or cargo received with physical damage. Unlike a simple exception note at goods receipt, a formal OSD claim is a structured process – backed by photographs, scale tickets, and bill-of-lading copies – through which shippers, forwarders, or consignees pursue compensation from carriers or underwriters. Dedicated software tracks notification deadlines, calculates loss values, and logs every exchange through to settlement or denial. Timely filing is the single most critical factor: late notification routinely extinguishes the right to recovery regardless of how substantial the loss may be.
