Unlike conventional physical examination – where containers are unsealed and goods unloaded for manual inspection – non-intrusive inspection (NII) technologies scan cargo without breaking the seal. X-ray, gamma-ray, neutron, and electromagnetic imaging systems generate density and contrast images that allow customs officers to verify declared contents and detect hidden compartments or suspect materials within minutes. NII equipment operates at seaports, airports, land border crossings, and free trade zones worldwide; gamma-ray systems handle dense metallic loads well, while X-ray units are better suited to mixed consumer goods. Beyond the clear speed advantage over physical examination, NII significantly reduces the risk of cargo damage caused by unloading or unsealing. The term should not be confused with non-destructive testing (NDT), which focuses on material analysis and quality control of individual items rather than customs security screening.
