In articulated truck operations, the kingpin comes into play at the moment of coupling: a conical or cylindrical steel pin fixed to the semi-trailer locks into the fifth wheel of the tractor unit and transmits traction, braking, and steering forces throughout the journey. Safety standards such as ISO 3842 specify dimensional tolerances, material requirements, wear limits, and inspection procedures to prevent accidental uncoupling under load. Carriers and fleet operators must inspect the kingpin and fifth wheel regularly for wear, cracks, and correct locking – a defective coupling poses serious road safety and cargo-damage risks. The kingpin should not be confused with the turntable used on certain drawbar trailer combinations to allow articulation.
