Definition & Explanation

Before a shipper releases cargo for an Arctic sailing, the forwarder checks the ice class of the nominated vessel. Ice class is a notation assigned by a classification society stating what ice conditions a ship's hull, structural reinforcement and propulsion power are designed for. Widely used systems include the Finnish-Swedish classes 1A Super through 1C for the Baltic and the Polar Classes PC 1 to PC 7 used for polar waters. The notation determines which trading areas and seasons a vessel may work, whether icebreaker escort becomes necessary and how underwriters price the risk – so it feeds directly into rate, transit time and cover. Not to be confused with an ice class surcharge, which is merely the fee charged for deploying ice-strengthened tonnage.
