Freight acceptance marks the moment the carrier takes legal custody of a shipment and assumes liability for its safe delivery. At pickup or depot drop-off, the carrier checks the external condition of the goods, verifies quantities and weight against the consignment note or booking confirmation, and issues the applicable transport document – a waybill, air waybill (AWB), or bill of lading. Any visible damage or discrepancy noted at this stage is recorded as a reservation, protecting the carrier from claims for pre-existing damage. The signatures exchanged at acceptance are the primary evidence in any subsequent loss or damage claim and establish the precise point at which liability transfers from shipper to carrier.
