Once a vehicle has delivered its outbound load, the question of the return leg arises: backhaul cargo is the freight picked up for the journey back to the point of origin, avoiding costly and wasteful empty miles. Freight exchanges and forwarders actively match available capacity with return-leg shipments, since empty running drives up per-ton costs and carbon emissions. For shippers, backhaul rates are often discounted because carriers accept lower margins in exchange for improved asset utilization and partial cost recovery on the return. Availability depends heavily on lane density: on busy corridors, backhaul loads are easy to find; on thin routes or with specialized equipment, empty returns remain frequent. Unlike primary freight, backhaul shipments are typically arranged at short notice on an opportunistic basis.
