Extrastat is the European Union's system for recording trade in goods with third countries—states outside the EU customs territory. The data are sourced from customs declarations filed each time goods enter or leave the EU at an external border. Records are broken down by commodity code (CN code), value, weight, and country of origin or destination, and feed into the official trade statistics published by Eurostat. Extrastat should not be confused with Intrastat, the separate reporting mechanism that captures intra-EU trade flows for which no customs declarations are required within the single market. For businesses, public authorities, and research institutions, Extrastat data serve as a primary reference for analysing the EU's trade balances, market shares, and external economic relationships.
