Freight forwarders and exporters in the automotive parts trade use cumulation of origin to keep supply chains preferential across multiple contracting parties. Under the EFTA–Chile FTA, the cumulation rule allows inputs and intermediate products from EFTA states and Chile to be counted as originating materials when determining origin – even where a part has been processed in more than one country. For automotive components, whose value chains routinely span several locations, this is particularly relevant: a transmission component manufactured in Switzerland and further processed in Chile can still qualify as an originating product. Bilateral cumulation should not be confused with diagonal cumulation, which requires a wider network of linked free trade agreements. The use of cumulation must be indicated on the origin declaration or movement certificate and substantiated with supplier documentation.
