EDIFACT Customs Declarations are electronic messages used by customs brokers, freight forwarders, and importers to submit declarations, entry summaries, and proof-of-entry documents to customs authorities. The messages conform to the UN/EDIFACT standard, which specifies mandatory structure, segments, and data elements. Electronic submission significantly speeds up clearance, cuts paperwork, and reduces errors through automated validation. At high-volume ports and in cross-border supply chains, EDIFACT-based customs communication is now the norm rather than the exception. It should be distinguished from country-specific customs interfaces that use EDIFACT syntax but implement their own national message profiles.
