A consignee opens the container on arrival to find breakage, water ingress, or crushed packaging – that is cargo damage in practice. Cargo damage is any physical impairment to goods occurring during carriage, handling, or intermediate storage that reduces their commercial value or fitness for use. Causes range from impact and vibration to moisture, temperature excursions, inadequate packaging, and rough handling. Shippers and receivers must document damage promptly – photographs, a note of protest on the delivery document, and a formal Damage Report – because claim deadlines under international conventions are short. Liability caps are set by the applicable transport law: the CMR for road, Hague-Visby or Rotterdam Rules for sea, and the Montreal Convention for air freight. Since these caps often fall well below the actual cargo value, shippers routinely take out all-risk or named-perils cargo insurance to cover the gap.
