Empty backhaul planning is the operational process of securing return cargo for vehicles that would otherwise travel empty after completing a delivery. Dispatchers and freight forwarders use digital load boards, spot markets, and established customer networks to match available trucks with outbound shipments on the return leg. Modern transport management systems (TMS) increasingly automate this matching. A consistent backhaul strategy cuts cost per kilometre, raises fleet utilisation, and lowers emissions per tonne transported – and should not be confused with container repositioning in sea freight, where empty equipment moves independently of any specific cargo booking.
