Definition & Explanation

The Automated Export System (AES) is the EU's trans-European export system. It implements the Union Customs Code requirements for export and exit formalities and has replaced the former Export Control System (ECS). AES handles the export declaration, the exit summary declaration and the re-export notification, and carries the exchange between the customs office of export and the customs office of exit, including the exit confirmation. The system consists of a common central component and the national export systems of the member states connected to it. Core functionalities had to be in place by 1 December 2023, advanced functionalities by 2 December 2024. Not to be confused with the identically named Automated Export System of the United States, through which exporters file Electronic Export Information with the U.S. Census Bureau.
