Advance cargo declaration occurs during transport planning or shortly after shipment begins: the freight forwarder electronically transmits detailed information—commodity description, weight, hazard classification, origin, destination—to customs authorities or port terminals, typically 24–48 hours before arrival. This advance notice enables customs and terminal operators to perform early risk profiling, identify high-risk shipments, and accelerate cargo processing upon arrival. In container shipping and hazardous goods, advance declaration is often mandatory by law (e.g., US SOLAS Rule 2, EU security regulations).
