Abandonment of cargo occurs when a shipper or consignee formally relinquishes ownership of goods by failing to collect or clear them within a period defined by statute or contract. Once abandonment is established, the carrier, warehouse operator, or customs authority acquires the right to dispose of the goods—through sale, auction, or destruction—to recover outstanding charges such as storage fees, freight, and applicable duties. Procedural requirements vary by jurisdiction but typically include documented notice to the cargo owner before any disposal action may proceed. Abandonment of cargo should not be confused with general average sacrifice, where goods are deliberately jettisoned to save the vessel and the remainder of the shipment.
