The Adriatic Gate Container Terminal in Rijeka has handled a total of four million TEU since 2011. Important note: This is the cumulative volume since ICTSI's entry and not annual throughput.
The Port of Rijeka is gaining importance for traffic to Central and Southeast Europe. A large portion of containers is forwarded by rail and truck to Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Serbia, and Slovakia.
By the end of 2025, the terminal operator completed an investment program worth approximately 35 million euros. This included two new Super-Post-Panamax cranes and two hybrid rubber-tyred gantry cranes for the container yard.
For shippers, the Northern Adriatic is attractive because it can offer shorter sea routes to Asia than Northern Europe for certain trade lanes. However, the quality of rail and road connections to the hinterland remains decisive.
Rijeka competes not only with Koper and Trieste, but also indirectly with Hamburg, Bremerhaven, and Rotterdam for traffic to Central and Eastern Europe.
