About This Seaport
Wakayama-Shimotsu Ko is an industrial port first and a container port second, built to feed the steelworks and oil refineries lining the Wakayama coast. It moves roughly 32.5 million tonnes of cargo a year, including LPG, coal, iron ore and steel. The port splits into five areas — Wakayama North, Wakayama Main, Wakaura Kainan, Shimotsu and Arida — with Shimotsu offering an oil terminal of three jetties and a sea island alongside general cargo, container and cement terminals. As a Designated Key Port it runs regular services to South Korea and clears imports and exports under standard Japan Customs practice. Road and rail connect the site to the wider Kansai industrial region. For larger container volumes with global reach, Kobe (JP UKB) and Osaka (JP OSA) are the strong neighbours.
