Each shipload removes the equivalent of many 40-tonne trucks from the city's congested roads, with onward distribution by road and rail directly within the urban area. For containerised overseas freight, Montreal is the nearest deep-sea gateway, while neighbouring Hamilton offers additional bulk capacity. Customs clearance follows standard Canadian import-export procedure.
