About This Seaport
Maize, sunflower seed and wheat dominate the quays of Tonnay-Charente, a specialised agribulk port on the River Charente near France's Atlantic coast. Cereals make up the bulk of traffic – roughly 60% maize and around 20% each of sunflower and wheat, plus barley, rapeseed, oats and peas – stored in a 300,000-tonne silo dating from 1975. A loading gantry rated at 600 t/h serves the ships; this tidal river port accommodates vessels up to 120 m long and 6.5 m draft, or some 5,000 to 10,000 dwt. Operated through the SICA cooperative, the grain is shipped mainly to the Benelux countries, Britain, Spain and Portugal. Road and rail links gather harvests from the farmland of Charente-Maritime. For larger parcels or containerised cargo, neighbouring La Rochelle/La Pallice is the obvious alternative.
