About This Seaport
Since 1909, when the Trans-Saint-Laurent Company launched service with the steamer SS Contest, a ferry from Saint-Siméon has linked Quebec's Charlevoix region with Rivière-du-Loup on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River. The roughly 65-minute crossing is now run jointly by Traverse Rivière-du-Loup–Saint-Siméon Ltée and the provincial Société des traversiers du Québec (STQ), with 2 to 4 daily departures from late March to early January. The current vessel, the Trans-St-Laurent, entered service in 1963 and carries up to 100 vehicles and 380 passengers, sailing through the Saguenay–St. Lawrence Marine Park, a noted whale-watching area. Saint-Siméon handles no container or bulk cargo; the port's role is primarily regional vehicle and passenger transport between Charlevoix and Bas-Saint-Laurent. For commercial seafreight, the ports of Québec City and Baie-Comeau are the nearest alternatives.
