About This Seaport
Heddle Marine, which reopened the yard in 2017, makes Port Weller (CA SC4) in St. Catharines the largest Canadian-owned dry-dock facility on the Great Lakes. Sited at the Lake Ontario entrance to the Welland Canal, it operates two Seawaymax graving docks – a Deep Dock for vessels up to 198 metres with 7.9 metres of water, plus a smaller Shelf dock – for shipbuilding, conversion and repair. Alongside the shipyard, a cargo terminal run by QSL handles bulk, breakbulk and project cargo, with more than 300 metres of wharfage and extensive laydown areas. A channel depth around 9.4 metres and the canal location tie the port into the Welland Canal and St. Lawrence Seaway system, and thus to upper Great Lakes traffic. For forwarders, Port Weller matters mainly for ship repair and heavy-lift or project cargo rather than scheduled container services. Containerised freight for the region moves through Hamilton or the Port of Toronto.
