About This Seaport
Shediac Harbour's roots trace back to the 1910s, when lobster, oyster and clam processing operations were built on its wharf, laying the foundation for the seafood trade that still defines the port today. Located on Shediac Bay in New Brunswick's Northumberland Strait, the harbour is the commercial and cultural hub of Shediac, self-styled 'Lobster Capital of the World', and its main cargo remains landed lobster and scallops rather than containerised freight. Besides seafood landings, the harbour mainly serves recreational boating and marina traffic. There is no container or RoRo terminal for international break-bulk cargo, and the channel suits only shallow- to medium-draught vessels. Ice closes the shipping season outside mid-April to mid-December. For commercial container and general cargo, Saint John and Halifax are the relevant alternative ports in the region.
