About This Seaport
Reached through a tidal lock at the entrance to the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal, Sharpness is a compact dock port at the head of the Bristol Channel where the River Severn narrows. It takes vessels of up to about 6,000 tonnes, with a maximum beam of 16.76 metres and no length limit, and works dry bulk and breakbulk rather than containers. Typical cargoes are cement, fertiliser, grain and animal feed, coal, minerals, timber and forest products, general cargo and scrap metal, with fertiliser and cement imported and scrap steel exported. There is no container or RoRo handling at the dock. Road access is strong, sitting between M5 junctions 13 and 14 for the West Midlands, South West and South Wales. For boxes, larger ships or RoRo, forwarders turn to Bristol (Avonmouth and Royal Portbury) or to Newport and Cardiff across the estuary.
