About This Seaport
Now a wholly owned subsidiary of Namura Shipbuilding, Sasebo Heavy Industries (SSK) keeps this port on the west coast of Kyushu an industrial and repair centre rather than a container gateway. New shipbuilding was halted in 2022; the yard today concentrates on ship repair and conversion, with four repair docks — one able to take vessels up to 400,000 dwt — serving commercial vessels as well as Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and U.S. Navy ships based in Sasebo. The Miura quay, opened in 2014, allows vessels of around 77,000 tonnes to berth, while the international terminal commissioned in 2015 mainly handles ferry and cruise traffic. Liner container cargo plays almost no role here; shippers rely instead on the larger Kyushu ports of Hakata (Fukuoka) and Kitakyushu. Inland connections run by road and the regional rail network toward Fukuoka. Japanese customs clearance is available, but in practice covers project and shipyard-related consignments rather than routine box traffic.
