Saaremaa's farming, forestry and quarrying economy gives Roomassaare its purpose: sitting on a narrow peninsula some two kilometres south of Kuressaare, it is the island's principal cargo port. Around 130,500 tonnes of freight and roughly 6,700 passengers pass through each year, with agricultural goods, timber, stone and peat dominating exports and farm machinery and groceries the main imports.
