About This Seaport
Latvia's largest port and a true multipurpose gateway rather than a single-commodity terminal, Riga (LV RIX) moved about 16.7 million tonnes of cargo in 2025, handling timber, containers, agribulk, fertilizers, metals and oil products. Its quays run along the Daugava River down to the Gulf of Riga, giving it the character of both a river and a sea port. Containers move mainly through the Baltic Container Terminal (BCT), reaching roughly 495,700 TEU in 2025 – close to 99 percent of all Latvian boxes – served by nine liner services from CMA CGM, MSC, Hapag-Lloyd, ONE, Unifeeder and Samskip. The once-substantial coal transit trade has fallen sharply since sanctions on Russia and Belarus, pushing the port toward containers, forest products and general cargo. Rail links in both 1,520 mm broad gauge and standard gauge, plus road connections, serve the Latvian hinterland and neighbouring states, with full customs and EU external-border clearance in place. Regional alternatives include Klaipėda, Tallinn (Muuga) and the Polish ports of Gdańsk and Gdynia.
