About This Seaport
Around 271,690 tonnes of fresh produce passed through Port-Vendres in 2013, ranking this deep-water port on France's Côte Vermeille as the country's third-largest fruit port. Reefer cargo and chilled produce from Morocco, Cameroon, South Africa and Argentina are discharged here, most of it bound for the Saint-Charles wholesale market near Perpignan. CMA CGM runs a weekly Agadir–Port-Vendres service with roughly 900-TEU vessels offering 220 reefer plugs, carrying over 40,000 tonnes of fruit a year from Agadir alone and sparing about 100 trucks the overland trip across Spain. Refrigerated road transport links the quay to Perpignan and onward to northern Europe. For larger container liner or bulk traffic, Sète or Marseille-Fos are better suited. As a specialised reefer and fruit gateway on the western Mediterranean, however, Port-Vendres (FR POV) holds an established niche.
