About This Seaport
Once the home port of Canadian Pacific Railway's Great Lakes fleet, Port Mcnicoll on Georgian Bay has shifted from grain shipping to residential redevelopment. Founded in 1908, it featured a 3,000-foot wharf and a 2-million-bushel grain elevator until the 1959 opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway diverted grain traffic elsewhere and cargo shipping collapsed. The site is now the focus of a roughly CAD 1 billion Skyline International project building up to 1,800 homes and a 1,000-slip marina. Port Mcnicoll carries no commercial freight relevance today; nearby Midland remains the active cargo port on Georgian Bay.
