About This Seaport
Bulk grain, fresh seafood and farm inputs are the cargoes that define Port Lincoln, a natural deep-water harbour at the southern tip of the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia, about 680 km from Adelaide. Its depth makes it one of Australia's significant grain export ports: the Viterra-run terminal ships wheat, barley and other grains from the Eyre Peninsula and lets large bulk carriers top up part-cargoes loaded at shallower regional ports. In the 2024/25 harvest, Viterra shipped over 900,000 tonnes of grain from Port Lincoln to 17 countries, at loading rates of up to 3,000 tonnes per hour. Port Lincoln is also a major fishing and aquaculture centre, exporting fresh tuna, kingfish and oysters. On the import side, fertiliser and agricultural inputs feature. Scheduled container shipping is effectively absent, with hinterland links by road and rail. For containerised cargo in South Australia, the Port of Adelaide and its Flinders Adelaide Container Terminal are the relevant gateway.
