About This Seaport
A 27-metre-deep, ice-free channel and a string of dedicated berths make the Strait of Canso at Point Tupper one of the deepest natural harbours on North America's east coast, able to take carriers up to 500,000 dwt. Port Hawkesbury's terminals are purpose-built: gypsum, pulp and supercalender paper, a liquids and petroleum jetty, a utility coal terminal, and a common-user pier for general and breakbulk cargo. It is not a container port — throughput is dominated by bulk, liquids, paper, gypsum and coal. The site handles roughly 7.9 million tonnes a year, and EverWind Fuels is developing a green hydrogen and ammonia production and export facility at Point Tupper. Inland links run via the Trans-Canada Highway 104, with limited rail onward into Cape Breton. Customs clearance is provided by the Canada Border Services Agency. Containerised freight is routed through Halifax instead.
